Unacademy dismissed Karan Sangwan, an instructor, claiming that expressing personal opinions and views in the classroom is inappropriate. Sangwan, who was let go after suggesting to students during a class that they vote for educated candidates, believes he was removed due to potential political pressure.

Unacademy’s co-founder Roman Saini stated that Sangwan breached his contract, justifying the decision to part ways. Sangwan attempted to discuss the matter with top management but was met with the response- ‘we cannot do anything’. He suspects political influence played a role in his dismissal. Sangwan has started his own YouTube channel and plans to reveal more about the controversy on August 19.

Sangwan Stands by Education:

Sangwan maintains that his comments were taken out of context and he did not mention any specific names or parties. He advocated for educated individuals to enter politics and make informed decisions. Sangwan expressed that he stands by his remarks, as education is crucial in life.

The video clip that sparked the controversy featured Sangwan suggesting that voters should choose well-educated politicians who understand the issues. Unacademy’s response emphasized its commitment to providing unbiased education and its Code of Conduct for educators. They indicated that personal opinions shared in the classroom could improperly influence learners, leading to Sangwan’s breach of conduct and subsequent dismissal.

Various politicians, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, criticized Unacademy’s decision, suggesting that advocating for educated leaders is not a biased opinion. They viewed Sangwan’s comments as encouraging a positive influence on young minds.
