Donald Trump Pledges to Declassify JFK, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination Files Before His Inauguration
Among his few promises he made before he was inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States, declassifying records on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert Kennedy, and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Speaking in a rally at downtown Washington over Sunday, Trump has announced his intent to release highly anticipated records reviving public interest in these crucial historical events.

“In the days ahead, we are going to open up records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert Kennedy, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and other matters of great public interest,” Trump announced. The remarks were made ahead of his inauguration at the Capitol on Monday.
This is not the first time that Trump made such promises when dealing with these sensitive matters. While on campaign trail, Trump promised to allow public access into secret intelligence and law enforcement documents associated with the murder of JFK during his assassination back in 1963. During Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021, he released portions of the papers but withheld majority based on fears over national security as well as pressure from both the CIA and FBI.
J.F.K, M.L.K. Jr., and R.F.K. assassinations, in 1963 and 1968 respectively, remain high-profile, debating topics that receive much speculation on the street corners. Technically, J.F.K. died at the hand of a single gunman named Lee Harvey Oswald. However, even after polls in which millions report that there had to have been a more sweeping conspiracy behind J.F.K.‘s death, the U.S. Government stands by their conclusions.

Questions exist in the assassination of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., son of Robert Kennedy and nephew to JFK, has long maintained that the CIA had a role in JFK’s assassination, which the agency has repeatedly denied as a lie. Kennedy Jr. also stated that there were more than one shooter in his father’s assassination contrary to official investigations’ findings.
Although Trump brashly promised to declassify all relevant records, he short of promising the full declassification of the same, leaving the scope of his claimed transparency somewhat uncertain. Still, his announcement has breathed new life into hope on the part of conspiracy theorists, historians, and the general public that light may shine on these tragic events after all.
It might be a historical step toward resolving some of the most contentious questions in American assassination history, should it materialize. Only time will tell whether he can honor that commitment, but he certainly has sparked great hope and debate for anticipation.
