Rescue Operations in Assam: Body Recovered From Flooded Illegal Coal Mine as Search for Trapped Workers Continues
Tragedy struck Assam’s Dima Hasao district, as one body has been recovered from an inundated coal mine two days after a sudden water gush trapped nine workers. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the somber update on Wednesday, expressing his condolences to the bereaved family.
“21 Para divers just retrieved a body from the bottom of the well. Our thoughts and prayers with the grief-stricken family, ” stated CM Sarma in a social media post.
Rescue operations are full-fledged efforts in which teams such as Army, Navy, National Disaster Response Force, and SDRF personnel are working towards it. The site has already been entered into by divers; however, sophisticated de-watering pumps have been inducted to dry the mine.
As of Wednesday, personnel from the Navy are present and are getting ready to join the search, while pumps of SDRF are being moved to the spot. Besides, an ONGC de-watering pump has also been airlifted to the area, and it awaits improvement in the weather to be used.

In order, authorities believe this mine was also conducting mining operations illegally as the police begin an official case into the events surrounding the incident. “A case has been registered under Umrangso PS Case No: 02/2025 for violating various sections of Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act 1957.” One person- Punish Nunisa- so far has already been arrested relating to the episode.
The disaster happened on Monday when the mine suddenly flooded, locking the workers inside. Rescue teams have encountered immense difficulties because of the depth and volume of water but are still continuing to find the remaining eight individuals.
This has brought into sharp focus the regulatory lapses in the region where, often, such unauthorized mining activities go unchecked. The incident brings to mind a grim reminder of the dangers laborers face when working under precarious and unlawful conditions.

Chief Minister Assures the public that all resources are being mobilized to expedite rescue efforts and accountability. “We are committed to leaving no stone unturned in this operation. The safety and security of our citizens remain our utmost priority,” Sarma emphasized.
As rescue teams work to battle harsh conditions, this incident underlines the need to implement strict laws governing mining regulations and enhanced security measures to avert such tragedy in the future.
