Tesla Gears Up for India Entry with New Job Listings Following Musk-Modi Talks

Tesla is gearing up for its India entry by hiring key roles and planning manufacturing plants, following a crucial meeting between Elon Musk and PM Modi.

Tesla Prepares for India Entry with Key Hirings and Manufacturing Plans After Elon Musk’s Meeting with PM Modi

Tesla Inc., the globally acclaimed electric vehicle (EV) and renewable energy giant, has made a major move towards foraying into the Indian market. The company has started hiring staff for different roles in India, indicating its seriousness towards having a local presence. This comes after a top-level meeting between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s visit to the United States.

Tesla Begins Hiring in India

Tesla recently uploaded 13 career opportunities on LinkedIn, both back-office and retail operations. Career opportunities posted include Service Technician, Service Manager, Inside Sales Advisor, Customer Support Supervisor, Customer Support Specialist, Order Operations Specialist, Service Advisor, Tesla Advisor, Parts Advisor, Delivery Operations Specialist, Business Operations Analyst, and Store Manager. These hiring postings indicate that Tesla is preparing for sales and service in India, and that may be the signal for its sale of EVs in India.

Expansion Plans and Manufacturing Plant

Tesla will set up three manufacturing facilities in India, according to Finance Ministry sources. The first two will be at Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, and the third is yet to be decided. Tesla has been on the lookout for sites to set up its manufacturing hubs for a long time now, but things picked up pace after Musk met PM Modi. The company is also planning to open at least two showrooms in key cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad.
Overcoming Obstacles in the Indian Market

Tesla’s entry into India has already hit some roadblocks in the past because of a high tariff on the import of EVs in the country. India had earlier imposed a 110% basic customs duty on luxury cars worth more than $40,000, and this was too costly for Tesla’s imported cars. But the government dropped the duty recently to 70%, and this will help Tesla bring its cars to India with ease.

Furthermore, India’s goal to be net-zero by 2070 aligns with Tesla’s vision for sustainable energy. While India is the world’s third-largest emitter of greenhouse. gases, with its expanding middle class and growing emphasis on clean-energy sources, it is a market that holds promising outlook for electric vehicles.

Future Prospects

Tesla has been an outspoken advocate for reduced import duties as a prerequisite to making meaningful investment in India.

The government of India hit back by launching a new policy in March 2024, which provides smaller import duties to EV producers that commit to establishing local facilities with at least $500 million (41.5 billion rupees) of investment. Meanwhile, Tesla’s arrival in India appears nearer than ever before, which could bring a total transformation of the country’s EV scene.
