Terrorists from the group had targeted the construction camp housing workers of a private company, contracted to construct a tunnel, by raining bullets on it late at night. The terrorists stormed at least two camps, killing several people including both local and non-local workers.

According to reports, victims of the attack include Dr. Shahnawaz from Nayidgam in Budgam, Punjab’s Gurmeet Singh from Gurdaspur, Mohammad Haneef, and Faheem Nasir, two safety managers from Bihar, Anil Kumar Shukla, mechanical manager from Madhya Pradesh, and Shashi Abrol, designer from Jammu. Since then, the army and police cordoned off the area, further ramping up their search to apprehend terrorists behind this ghastly act. Media has been barred from the site with continued operation on and journalists are not allowed to go beyond Manigam, 50 km away from the attack site.

The event has been condemned in all quarters. Newly elected Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, strongly condemned the attack as a “dastardly and cowardly act against unarmed civilians working on a vital infrastructure project.” Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha assured that everyone behind this dastardly act will be brought to justice.

Also condemning the attack was Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister, and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi. Gadkari said that these laborers were involved in one of the biggest infrastructure projects, but Gandhi described it as a crime against humanity and urged unity in opposing violence.

This is one of the deadliest attacks in recent times, barely days after forming a new government in Jammu and Kashmir. This is made possible after the first elections since the abrogation of Article 370 that took place in the region.
