Massive Disruption in Delhi NCR as Over 4 Lakh Auto-Taxi Drivers Go on Strike, Protesting Against App-Based Services Like Ola and Uber on August 22-23
Auto and taxi drivers in Delhi NCR are likely to embark on a two-day strike on August 22-23, a development that is likely to trigger massive disruption of transportation in the region. About four lakh numbers of auto-rickshaw and taxi and other small vehicles would remain off the road and passengers could be stranded as result. Led by more than 15 unions, the strike seeks to demonstrate against the fact that drivers have been able to achieve less amount of monetary revenue, mainly because of the presence of cab hailing apps like Ola and Uber.

These trade unions are the Taxi Chalak Sena Union, the Delhi Auto Tricycle Driver Union and Rajdhani Tourist Driver Union. Their major complaint is on the high commissions demanded by the app-based firms, which they state are gravely affecting them. Addressing trespassing of app-based drivers and companies into the traditional auto-rickshaw business, Kishan Verma, President of the All Delhi Auto-Taxi Transport Congress said that while their earnings are on the decline, the business of the app companies are booming without any restrictions.
Besides strike, there will be a demonstration in front of Jantar Mantar on 22nd of August and they want to attract more attention towards their problems. The protest is used to demand immediate action on the part of the government to protect the interests of auto and taxi drivers.

As a result, this predicted strike is expected to prove inconvenient to most people using transport in Delhi NCR since there will be very little available. That is why the unions are urging the government to act quickly to respond to problems resulting from the expansion of app-based services and protect drivers from discrimination.
