Supreme Court questions Andhra Pradesh government over Tirupati Laddu ghee controversy, seeking proof of claims
The Supreme Court of India raised tough questions to the Andhra Pradesh government on Monday over claims that adulterated ghee was used in the famous Tirupati temple’s Laddu prasadam. The court expressed concern about why the state government made public statements without clear proof of wrongdoing, suggesting that religious sentiments should have been handled more carefully.

Justice BR Gavai, one of the judges on the case, pointed out that lab reports showed the ghee that was tested was a rejected sample, and it was not confirmed whether this ghee had actually been used to make the sacred laddus. Justice Gavai asked senior lawyer Siddharth Luthra, representing the Andhra Pradesh government, if there was any evidence that substandard ghee had been used. Luthra replied that the matter was still under investigation.
The court questioned why the government rushed to the press with the news when the investigation was not complete. What was the need to go to the press immediately? You need to respect religious sentiments,Justice Gavai said. Luthra responded that people had complained about the taste of the laddus, which triggered the investigation.
The court also said that an independent investigation might be needed to ensure the matter is handled fairly. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Andhra Pradesh government is already looking into the issue, but the Supreme Court is considering moving the case to another agency. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was asked to report back on the next steps by October 3.
The controversy began when former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu accused the current government, led by Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, of allowing animal fat to be used in the preparation of the sacred laddus. Naidu claimed that adulterated ghee was used during Reddy’s rule, which sparked public outrage. In response, Reddy denied the allegations, calling Naidu’s claims false and accusing him of trying to shift political focus.
