The ban on carrying sharp-edged weapons in Srinagar district was declared by the District Magistrate, Mohammad Aijaz Asad, in response to recent stabbing incidents reported in various areas. The Senior Superintendent of Police highlighted the potential threat to public safety due to such incidents.

Sharp-Edged Weapons Ban: 

The order prioritizes public safety, stating that the use of sharp-edged weapons in public places poses a significant risk to citizens’ lives. The possession of such weapons with blades exceeding nine inches in length or two inches in width, for purposes other than domestic, agricultural, scientific, or industrial, is now a cognizable offense under the Arms Act 1959.

Exceptions:

The ban immediately applies to business establishments involved in selling or purchasing such weapons. The definition of ‘sharp-edged weapon’ includes objects capable of causing harm, such as knives, swords, daggers, box cutters, and razors. However, law enforcement agencies and individuals with legitimate occupational needs (e.g., butchers, carpenters, chefs) are exempted from the ban. Individuals possessing such weapons are asked to surrender them at the nearest police station within 72 hours.
