Soldiers Missing in Sikkim Flash Flood

A cloudburst triggered a flash flood in Sikkim, causing the Teesta River to swell and impacting the Lachen valley. Twenty-three soldiers were missing, and property damage occurred. Relief efforts are underway.

Gangtok: Following a flash flood in the Teesta River caused by a cloudburst, 23 soldiers are missing in Sikkim. According to the Army, a thorough search has been conducted to find the missing servicemen. 

Some enterprises along the Lachen valley, according to a statement by the Army’s Eastern Command, have been impacted. ” Flash flash from the Chungthang dam was released, causing an abrupt rise in flood levels of up to 15-20 feet high downstream. Army trucks parked at Bardang near Singtam have been impacted as a result. Some vehicles are reportedly immersed in the slush, and 23 personnel have been reported missing. Search efforts are in progress, according to the statement.

Sikkim Cloudburst Flooding

It rained heavily all night long in Sikkim. Lhonak Lake in north Sikkim overflowed due to a cloudburst, which also raised the water levels in the Teesta River. Before entering Bangladesh, the Teesta River passes through Sikkim and West Bengal. Residents of Sikkim are on the high warning from the local government. Videos taken and posted by locals show the river in flood and roads being washed away.

“No one has been hurt, but there has been serious property damage to the public domain. In Singtam, a few persons have also been reported missing. During a visit to an impacted area, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced that relief efforts were underway.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the lake in Sikkim’s Chungthang overflowed, causing the Teesta to swell. Low-lying places including Ghish, Domohani, Mekhaliganj, and Gazoldoba may be impacted. The meteorological office urged people to exercise caution.
