Indian Navy Takes Over Investigation into Shivaji Statue Collapse: Opposition Blames Maharashtra Government for Poor Construction Quality
The destruction of the 35-feet tall statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Rajkot Fort in Sindhudurg district has led to immense controversy and political turmoil amid the pandemic. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the statue on 4th December, 2023, and within just eight months, it has started to disintegrate, For which opposition parties have raised their voice.

This event happened on August 26, and seeing as the statue is in Malvan, it was quite shocking when the statue collapsed. Such a dramatic failure has been met with plenty of criticism from different political leaders. State President of the NCP Jayant Patil has put the blame o the Maharashtra government that they did not pay attention to the quality work in the statue. Patil actually pointed out that the condition of the administration in selecting innovation for the statue should have focused on how to make the statue stand the test of a concrete basis of an event they celebrated – the inauguration. He stated that the government just releases tenders and accepts some rebates while the project is not properly done.

Concerns similar to the above were expressed by Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Vaibhav Naik who claimed that the statue collapsed due to the shoddy workmanship. Naik sought an inquiry into the issue in detail, to call for the heads to roll for having constructed and installed the statue in the first place. Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also criticised the contractor asking whether the project was awarded to a Thane-based contractor and demanded to know if there was corruption involved.

The Kerala Congress has also joined the political drama by tweeting a sarcastic remark that ‘even the nature seemed to be politically motivated,’ while former Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray said that he is disappointed that the government had to construct it hurriedly for political advantage, and did not ‘do justice to the respect which is due to the pedestal of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The Indian Navy has taken up the case and a First Information Report FIR have been lodged against the contractor. This move can be seen as making a lot of sense given the fact that we are dealing with this highly publicized collapse.
