During a press conference, the ministers explained that Mohammed Latif, the president of the mosque management committee, and Maulvi Shezaad from the Waqf Board, provided a letter to the Shimla Municipal Commissioner. This letter confirmed that they have agreed to seal the expanded section of the mosque.
Mufti Mohammad Shafi Kasmi, a member of the mosque’s welfare committee, mentioned that they are seeking permission from the Municipal Commissioner to demolish the unauthorized structure. The committee includes the mosque’s Imam, members of the Waqf Board, and other mosque management representatives.
The ministers also accused some people of trying to turn this issue into a communal conflict for their own interests. They pointed out that the construction took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, while the BJP was in power in the state. They called for an investigation into how the illegal structure was built and why municipal officials did not prevent it.
In connection with recent protests on September 5 and 11 near the mosque, the police have filed eight FIRs against more than 50 people involved. Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, the Superintendent of Police, confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that security around the 14 mosques in Shimla has been strengthened.
Additionally, today, there was a three-hour bandh in Shimla where shops and businesses were closed. This bandh was in protest against the police actions taken during the demonstrations.
