Three failed attempts
Three attempts to elect the mayor of Delhi had failed, and the election had been in limbo. As the earlier elections were delayed due to a commotion about the voting rights being given to nominated members, Delhi was elected mayor in the fourth attempt.
According to the rules, the MCD must choose five mayors over five years, starting with a woman. An elected council member from a Scheduled cast is given the position in the third year.
In a significant win for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Supreme Court had on February 17 ordered that alderperson, members nominated by the Lieutenant Governor, would not be allowed to cast votes in Delhi mayoral elections.
AAP had previously alleged that the nominated members were former associates of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which could lead to unfair Delhi mayoral polls.
