Khaleda Zia Released from Jail as Sheikh Hasina Resigns and Flees Bangladesh Amid Escalating Unrest and Political Turmoil

Bangladesh’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin has called for the release of the former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in a major political event. This decision came after the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from his/her position due to increased crises and decided to leave the country. The announcement was made after holding a meeting with the members of the opposition parties following in which the following decision was taken “Whereas the members of the opposition have met in a meeting and have resolved unanimously to free Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia immediately as per media statement.

Khaleda Zia, 78, and Sheikh Hasina remain two of the prominent political actors in Bangladesh: they are often paired under the ‘Rival Begums’ label. Zia, the leader of the BNP, has been a major challenger of Hasina who belongs to president’s Awami League Party that has been in power for the last 15 years. This animosity has stemmed from the fact that Zia’s husband, Ziaur Rahman, was from another generation while Hasina’s father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was from the same generation of Zia but from an opposing party. This fierce rivalry involved both women in switching power for 30 years with the equation deeply etching the political story of the country.

Notably, the decision to release Zia-Ul-Huq was reached after an emergency meeting by the country’s top military officers including Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman and leaders of major opposition parties BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders. It also addressed the issue of releasing all the people arrested during the recent students protests.

There have been immense struggles observed in Bangladesh, especially job reservation issues in Bangladesh government departments. It reached the point where the protesters managed to besiege Hasina’s home and the Parliament building. Following growing opposition, she was forced to resign and has since sought asylum in India where she is currently stationed at Hindon airbase. The current India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime has taken keen interest on this worrying situation especially along the Indian Bangladesh border where security has been tightened.
