The court found Raut guilty of making defamatory statements against Medha Somaiya and her husband. The statements were made in an article published in the Marathi newspaper Saamna, which is run by the Shiv Sena party. In the article,Sanjay Raut accused Kirit Somaiya and his wife, Medha, of a ₹100 crore scam involving the illegal construction of public toilets, harming environment and regulations.

Medha Somaiya denied these allegations and said that Raut’s claims were completely false and aimed at ruining her reputation. She filed a defamation case in court, saying that the article hurt her image in the public’s eye. She also provided newspaper clippings and other evidence to show that the defamatory statements had spread widely through other media outlets.

The court convicted Raut under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with punishment for defamation. Raut, a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, responded to the court’s decision by expressing disbelief. He said, “I respect  courts, but surprised by the decision. It is hard to expect justice when the Prime Minister attends private events at the Chief Justice’s house.”

The case highlights the ongoing political tensions between Shiv Sena (UBT) and BJP leaders in Maharashtra, with defamation becoming a common tool in their public confrontations
