S Jaishankar to Visit Pakistan for SCO Summit, Marking First Indian Foreign Minister’s Trip in Nine Years
Latest news update: India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Pakistan this month, which will be his first official visit to the neighbouring country after assuming the new post. The trip is after a long nine year break; the last instance of an Indian foreign minister visiting Pakistan was in 2015 when Sushma Swaraj attended Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process conference.

Jaishankar will be representing India at the forthcoming SCO Heads of Government meeting to be held in Islamabad on 15-16 October. This visit is very important as it is taking place at a time when India and Pakistan relationship has worsened considerably after the Uri attack in September 2016. India has always been following the policy of not having any dialogue with Pakistan without stopping support especially to terrorism.
Still, earlier Pakistan had officially invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for attending the SCO summit. However, Modi will not be attending, Jaishankar’s presence, however, will be a significant event in diplomatic history of Indo Pak Relations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has stated that Jaishankar’s agenda would include the summit and no cues have been given on possible bilateral meeting with Pakistan yet.
This visit makes a lot of diplomatic sense as both countries are continuing a delicate dance. That is why, although the trip is TW is primarily focused on the SCO summit, it can be considered as a good chance to discuss more general problems occurred in the area.
