S. Jaishankar’s High-Stakes Visit to the Maldives: Aims to Rebuild Relations and Navigate New Geopolitical Challenges Amidst Growing Chinese Influence
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s tour of the Maldives from August 9-11 is quite meaningful as he is the first foreign minister from India that has paid a visit to the Maldives since President Mohamed Muizzu came to office. Muizzu has brought his administration to set the Maldives closer to China, a development that New Delhi seems to fear over the future of cooperation.

Jaishankar’s arrival was marked by a welcome by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives Moosa Zameer at the Velana International Airport. Later, Jaishankar reciprocated the gesture in a tweet stating that the Maldives was a key part of both India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and the “SAGAR” policy. Another factor that the visit highlights is the necessity of India recognizing the new leadership in the Maldives and coming to an understanding with the new authorities.

The Union Minister’s schedule is the meeting with the President of the Maldives, Muizzu, and the Foreign Minister Zameer being aimed at discussing the impact of the recently enhanced relations between the Maldives and China. The talks will probably consider specifics for enhancing defense and security cooperation with focus on India as an important ally in the region. Besides, the diplomatic dialogue, Jaishankar will also discuss several Indian-funded projects such as the construction of Thilamalé Bridge and projects in Addu. Mr Modi wants to carry on the already established strategic partnership between New Delhi and Malé in the context of the changing international relations in South Asia.
