Bengal Junior Doctors Resume Full Strike Over Safety and Security Concerns Following RG Kar Rape-Murder Case

Junior doctors across West Bengal have called a complete ‘cease work’ protest on the grounds of their safety and security at medical institutions in response to the shocking rape-murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The decision was taken immediately after a 42-day long agitation that had only recently been partially withdrawn. The government has not taken concrete action in this regard; hence, doctors have decided to stop work in full force again.

The doctors have given 10 demands and some of them include revamping health infrastructure, hospitals and security through the immediate removal of a culture of fear and political influence in healthcare delivery. After holding a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the doctors say that still no work has been done on the ground to meet any of these demands, and that’s why they feel they have no other go but to return to an all-out strike.

Momentum for the protests increased with the Calcutta High Court giving its nod to the Joint Platform of Doctors’ mass rally slated for Tuesday. Such a rally reportedly gets lakhs of footfall and will be peaceful as an act of protest against the inactivity of the state government. With the nod of the court and the support of the medical fraternity, the junior doctors are determined to continue fighting for a safer working environment until their demands are met.
