RG Kar Rape Case Stalemate Continues, Mamata Banerjee Says ‘Willing To Resign’ As Junior Doctors Refuse To Hold Talks

Thursday, September 12, at Nabanna, Howrah, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addresses a press conference in the midst of a standoff with protesting Doctors  over their long list of demands after the rape and murder tragedy at RG Kar Hospital. Attempts to break the impasse between the West Bengal government and the indignant junior physicians came to a standstill on Thursday when the doctors refused to meet with chief minister Mamata Banerjee unless their demand for a live-streamed meeting was fulfilled.

Mamata Banerjee stayed inside the premises for more than an hour, despite having pledged to meet the physicians as part of ongoing efforts to terminate their strike. The doctors insisted on a live telecast of the session despite the state government’s assurances that it would be taped for transparency. Manoj Pant, the chief secretary of the state, had earlier stated that live streaming was not possible but assured that the meeting will be fully videotaped.

The purpose of the conference was to resolve the doctors’ complaints about how the matter regarding their colleague’s death was handled. When the 31-year-old trainee doctor’s body was discovered on August 9 with serious injuries, the medical community was outraged. This sparked a state-wide protest that seriously hindered government hospital healthcare services.

CM Mamata Banerjee, who was empathetic but clearly annoyed, said she was willing to overlook the standoff and forgive the physicians who were demonstrating. To break the impasse over RG Kar, I made three attempts to have discussions with the junior doctors. I still stand by my statement that I won’t hold them accountable for keeping us waiting for two hours by not showing there. Since it is our duty as seniors to pardon our younger ones, I will forgive them,” Banerjee remarked.
