Centre permits Renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad
Renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad as “Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar” and “Dharashiv, respectively
On February 24, the Centre approved the renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad, two cities in Maharashtra. Now, Osmanabad will be known as “Dharashiv,” while Aurangabad will be known as “Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.”
The Maharastra govt proposal was approved by the Central government citing “no objection” to changing the names of both Maharashtra districts as stated by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday, February 24.
Devendra Fadnavis, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, shared the news on Twitter and commented, “‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’ of Aurangabad, ‘Dharashiv’ of Osmanabad! The federal government approves the state government’s decision! Many thanks to Amitbhai Shah, Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Hon. Union Minister! The Chief Minister, @mieknathshindeji, and the government have “demonstrated”…

While Osmanabad was given its name in honour of a 20th-century king of Hyderabad, a princely state, Aurangabad took its name from the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
The second ruler of the Maratha kingdom was Chhatrapati Sambhaji, the eldest son of the warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. By Aurangzeb’s orders, Sambhaji Maharaj was put to death in 1689.
According to some researchers, the cave system known as Dharashiv, which is close to Osmanabad, dates back to the eighth century.
Right-wing Hindu organisations have long demanded that the two cities’ names be changed. The Center had no issues with changing the names of these two central Maharashtra cities, as per the letters.
Noticeably, the last cabinet decision of the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress government, which fell apart last June due to Shinde’s uprising against Uddhav Thackeray, was to rename Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv.
The decision made by the cabinet was reversed, and the upcoming government led by Shinde made a new decision.
Imtiaz Jaleel, an MP and the head of the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), tweeted in opposition to the renaming of Aurangabad and declared that they would demonstrate their support for Aurangabad.

Ambadas Danve, the leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), claimed that the renaming was a triumph for the late Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray’s stance. According to a tweet from Danve, the opposition leader in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Thackeray had “renamed” Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on May 9, 1988.
He stated, “The name of the individual (Aurangzeb) who destroyed the Kashi Vishweshwar temple has been erased.”
