The story of Atal Bihari Vajpayee is a story of coming back and adapting along with building his political career through diplomacy. He was a prominent orator and a great poet and entered the political field with Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) in 1957 which is the forerunner of BJP. The crucial opportunity he got by joining as one of the founding members when the BJP was formed in 1980 paved the way for his first PM ship in 1996. Although this first term of office was only for 13 days, there was another term starting in 1998 that saw Vajpayee further bolster the BJP’s place in government through strategic decision making.
The period of Vajpayee Prime Ministership during 1998 was most memorable for a historic announcement– India as a nuclear weapon state. Over and above, declaring nuclear tests in Pokhran, this style of leadership from Vajpayee was central to the Transformation of India’s stance on the world stage. The speech made on India’s nuclear stance was one of the major highlights of his presidency.
Thus, the moderation and diplomatic means were characteristic for him as for the leader, especially when it was necessary to speak about the so sensitive questions, like Jammu and Kashmir. So, we find that this statement “Kashmiriyat, Insaniyat, and Jamuriyat” became synonymous with his efforts to encompass a meaningful plan for the region and effectively made a long-lasting imprint upon the modern understanding.
At the international level, during his first term as the Foreign Minister of India during 1977-1979, Vajpayee brought about improvement in relations with neighboring countries. His address during the 32 nd session of the United Nation General Assembly , in Hindi also re state the vision of integration of India with the world. The principles he brought to the nation—‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ meaning that the world is one family—are congruent with the Indian philosophy of ‘Inclusiveness’.

Vajpayee’s life was filled with brilliant titles and people’s endearing terms for him. From ‘Atal Guru’ in his college days to ‘Vikas Purush’ and ‘Bhishma Pitamah’ of Indian politics, his persona was in a different orbit in all domains. He was poetic and political in his approach and was a great poet as well as a statesman.
He was conferred with the Bharat Ratna- the highest civilian award of India in December 2014 in recognition of his stupendous service to the country. As we remember Atal Bihari Vajpayee today, his profound words resonate: ”I have lived, I will die, I will come back, I am not afraid of letting go.” His impact remains, signifying a life of commitment and outstanding stewardship.
