How to wish Happy Eid-ul-Adha? Festival’s history and significance

As we celebrate Eid-ul-Adha or Bakri Eid on 29th June, let us try to find out the history and significance of this auspicious occasion. Let us also look at the ways to wish your loved and dear ones a Happy Eid-ul-Adha!

History and Significance

Also known as Bakra Eid, Bakrid, Eid al-Adha, Eid Qurban or Qurban Bayarami, this is the 2nd and the largest of the two main holidays that are celebrated in Islam, the other being  Eid al-Fitr.

According to the story of origin, one of the main trials of Abraham’s life was to slaughter his son. He kept on having dreams of slaughtering his son  Ishmael, and felt that it was a command from God and must be carried out.

His devotion to God led him to carry out this act, but the moment he was about to slaughter his son for God, God got so impressed that he wanted to honor his devotion. Abraham was gifted a lamb from heaven and this lamb was then slaughtered in place of Ishmael.

Hence this festival is also known as the Festival of Sacrifice.

One of the main traditions of Eid-ul-Adha or Bakra Eid is the slaughtering of an animal and sharing the meat in three equal parts-  for the family, for relatives and friends, and for poor people. Muslims all over the world want to spread the message that every one of them gets to eat meat on this beautiful day.
