Guru Purnima will be celebrated on 21 July 2024, Sunday. This is a day to remember or celebrate the teachers or the ‘‘gurus’’ in ones life. It is observed on the full moon day of the Hindu calendar’s ‘Ashada’ month that lies from June to July.

History
Originally this festival is related to the birth of the great saint Ved Vyas who was the author of the Mahabharata and the Puranas. It is further told that he had divided and edited the Veda into four portions which are now there today.
It is believed that on Guru Purnima day one can receive blessings for Ved Vyasa who is famously known as Maha Guru. They are thought to drive away the darkness of the night or ignorance and bring in the light of day or knowledge.
Buddhist History
In Buddhist literature it is said that on this day Buddha gave his first sermon to five monks after which the unit of five formed his ‘sangha’ or disciples.
Jain History
As per Jain history, it is observed to respect Lord Mahavira who turn out to be the Guru of Gautam Swami, his first Chelwa, on this Purnima day.

Ancient Folklore
The farmers of India since the remote past used to celebrate it as a thanksgiving offering to the Divine for a good rainfall which is fruitful for the subsequent harvest.
Guru Purnima Rituals
It is observed by the people of different religion in various customs and traditions.
Guru Purnima in Hinduism:
Besides, Hindus also celebrate Guru Purnima as Vyasa Puja. There are absolute calls to adore and pay respect to the Maha Guru deity to offer a prayer. The faithful extremely practice the act of chanting devotional songs and hymns throughout the day. Recitations from the Guru Gita, a compilations of holy text, are also read as a tribute to the Maha Guru. Blossoms and gifts are presented and ‘’prasad’’ is given, often referred as ‘’charanamritha’’ sometimes.
In some of the ashrams there is a practice of conducting a puja to the Sandals thinking that it belongs to Ved Vyasa. Some people go to their own spiritual leaders and recommit themselves, and their practices, to their masters.
Fellow disciples are also shown respect on this day through the ‘Guru Bhai,’ which signifies a level of equality with each person, acknowledging the spiritual path taken and the Self and the Other as One with the Guru and the Divine.
On this day, some people also begin their studies or spiritual path by presenting their gurus with an offering known as “deeksha.” On this day, Indian classical music students honor their masters, strengthening the sacred relationship between them known as the “guru-shishya parampara.”
