Punjab to Recruit 400 Doctors to Address Healthcare Staff Shortage and Boost Medical Education Initiatives
In a major step towards strengthening the health infrastructure, Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh recently announced in the assembly that the state government is going to recruit 400 doctors in the near future; recruitment should be the aim in the wake of shortfalls in medical staff and lack of good health services across the state. The recruitment process has already been done, and these new doctors will soon join different health care facilities in Punjab to reinforce the commitment of the state towards ensuring accessible and efficient medical services,” he said.

Expansion of Medical Education
Dr. Balbir Singh also presented the vision of the government for making Punjab a hub for medical education in addition to addressing the shortage of doctors. Under the same umbrella, medical colleges will be introduced in four districts: Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Sangrur, and Malerkotla. This will increase the scope in the state for young people to study and train to become doctors. It is hoped that the state would be able to meet the demand of health professionals in the future as well by training them as a professional. This move is in alignment with the long-term goal of the state in developing a strong health system that can better cater to its residents.

Public Support in Fighting Dengue
The doctor neither missed the fact that dengue control is not possible without public participation and was stressing this aspect also while inaugurating the state-level campaign for dengue awareness. The health department supported the campaign with Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital and Government Girls Senior Secondary School students from Faridkot to give a “collective fight” to the disease.
Mentioning success in this initiative, the health minister spoke about statistics in the Faridkot district, and there’s an incredible decrease in dengue cases. Last year, 654 cases were reported in the district, but now it’s come down to just 120-this really shows how effective such preventive measures and community involvement can be. It is only when they would be involved that the spread of awareness multiplies the reach and the impact of the campaign, says Dr. Singh, according to whom a very important role for students is the ‘spread of awareness’ for dengue prevention.

Involving Students in Public Health Campaigns
A person aware of the power of young minds regarding health awareness, Dr. Singh urged a proper health check-up for students and invariably encouraged active participation by students in public health campaigns, including the one against dengue. He also vowed to give prizes to outstanding students, hoping that this would encourage them to keep on the good work and contribute more to public health projects. Upon this campaign, he met the students directly by listening to their questions, sharing precautionary measures, and discussing treatment procedures for dengue.
Steps Forward in Health Care Services
Dr Balbir Singh elaborated further on general issues related to the health services of the state and said that more than 2.25 crore people have been treated at the state’s 881 Aam Aadmi Clinics (AACs). Through such clinics, accessible health care has reached a large number of residents.
Apart from announcing the recruitment of doctors, the health minister also directed appointment of support staff at district and sub-division hospitals. It will help healthcare facilities being fully geared up to meet demands of the patient. In fact, he disclosed that an effort would be made to ensure that there was no shortage of medicines in hospitals as well. Improvements on this count would be undertaken with suggestions from doctors, public representatives, and the staff concerned.
Medical Institutions Kept Their Support Flowing
Medical institutions have been actively participating and have further helped the success of public health campaigns in Punjab. The Vice-Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Dr. Rajiv Sood, assured full support in the state’s fight against dengue. The vice-chancellor assured the health minister that students from the university and the affiliated medical colleges would continue to offer their services for such campaigns, further strengthening the war against diseases like dengue.
Recruitment of 400 doctors and opening of new medical colleges can be a step in the right direction to make an attempt on upgrading health services in the province of Punjab, and it still seems that the government is taking the issue of health care seriously not only for immediacies but also for the long run.
