Maldives President Muizzu Reassures India That Closer Ties with China Will Not Compromise Regional Security or Undermine India’s Interests

The Maldivian President, Muviz, who is more friendly with China said during his four days visit to India that Maldives will not perform a single act in any manner that can possibly make India insecure. Maldivian President says this as the country’s closeness with China draws concern from other countries. Muizzu insisted that having actively building diplomatic relations with other countries, including the People’s Republic of China, Maldives remains devoted to the protection of the regional security and stability.

During the interview with The Times of India, Muizzu said that India is an important friend, and strategic cooperation between the two countries is strengthening. Based on Islamic history and culture, Maldives would never do anything which threatens the security of India. His comments came after the Maldivian Foreign Ministry ordered the withdrawal of Indian troops from the Maldives and a recent event where a Maldivian minister made fun of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Regarding the withdrawal of troops, Muizzu in its capacity said it was because of domestic concerns and not India. He stated that the relationship of the Maldives and India is improving and they have better understanding of each other’s problems.

Muizzu has come recently after campaigning for the “India Out”, it shows that he is open for engagement with India as well as other countries while building a triangular relationship with them. Those bilateral meetings with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi are towards preparing the future of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
