Prashant Kishor arrested during hunger strike, supporting students protesting alleged corruption in Bihar’s BPSC exam
Patna, Bihar: Political strategist and Jan Suraaj chief, Prashant Kishor, was arrested on Monday morning during his indefinite hunger strike at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. Kishor was protesting alleged irregularities in the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) 70th Combined Competitive Examination held on December 13.

Patna District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh stated that Kishor and his supporters were arrested for staging an illegal protest in a restricted area. “They were holding a dharna at an unauthorized location. Legal action will follow,” Singh said. Kishor and others have been taken to Patna AIIMS for medical examination and will be presented in court soon.

The controversy stems from allegations of a question paper leak during the BPSC exam. Although the commission denied the claims, it ordered a re-examination for 12,000 students who appeared at a specific exam center in Patna. However, only 5,943 candidates attended the re-exam, leaving many students frustrated. Protesters are demanding the complete cancellation of the exam, arguing that the re-exam is insufficient and unfair.
Kishor has been vocal about the issue, accusing the government of systemic corruption and urging Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to meet with the protesting students. “By holding a re-exam, the government has acknowledged irregularities. The chief minister must address the students’ demands for the sake of the state,” Kishor said before his arrest.
The protests have gained momentum, with Left-leaning student organizations, Congress leaders, and other political figures pledging support for the students. Demonstrators have staged rallies, disrupted rail and road traffic, and held candlelight marches across Bihar.
A student leader at the protests emphasized the larger issue at hand, saying, “This is not just about one exam. It’s about systemic corruption. We demand accountability.”
Prashant Kishor’s arrest has intensified the controversy, raising questions about how the government will handle the growing unrest. As protests continue to spread, the demand for transparency and justice remains central to the students’ fight. Whether the government will address these demands or the unrest will escalate further remains to be seen.
