Prime Minister Modi’s Historic Visit to Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict: Strengthening India’s Diplomatic Ties in Eastern Europe After 30 Years

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to visit Ukraine on August 23, the first such visit from an Indian Premier in three decades. It is the invitation of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and is anticipated to enhance the diplomatic relations between India and Ukraine which started only three decades back.
The timing of this visit is of certain importance as it is performed on Ukraine’s National Flag Day, which is very symbolic for the country. The visit is likely to act as something of a turning point in relations between India and Ukraine, with Modi and Zelenskyy likely to touch on a range of bilateral and multilateral issues. The authorities of Ukraine have also said that several documents will be signed during the visit to develop the strategic partnership of the two countries.

As with the previous visit, this visit happens as the host country is witnessing an extended and intensifying war between Ukraine and Russia. The war is now at its second year and three months, and recently, the Ukrainians have ventured into the Russian soil, that is, Kursk bring about escalating of conflict. PM Modi’s visit happens after he travelled to Russia where he attended the 22nd annual India Russia summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. These sequences of visits show India’s delicate tilt as the country side with both nations as the conflict ensues.

Apart from Ukraine, PM Narendra Modi will also be on a visit to Poland on 21-22 August wherein he will hold talks with Polish) Premier Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda. This visit is important as it is the first one recorded of an Indian Prime Minister in Poland in the last 45 years. The visit is in line with the India and Poland marking 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries showing that relation between the two countries has strengthened.
