PM Modi Strengthens Global Partnerships with Brazil G20 Summit Visit Following Historic Nigeria Trip
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Monday for the second leg of his three-nation diplomatic tour. The visit to Brazil follows a very important and productive trip to Nigeria where PM Modi held high-level bilateral talks with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria as well as met the vibrant Indian diaspora.

Addressing X, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the G20 Brazil Summit“, along with images of his warm reception at the airport. Posting on his official X handle, PM Modi welcomed himself by saying, ” Landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to take part in the G20 Summit.”. I look forward to the summit deliberations and fruitful talks with various world leaders.

PM Modi will be one of the chief attendees at the 19th G20 Summit, making India an active participant of the G20 Troika with Brazil and South Africa. Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden are scheduled to attend the summit, taking place between November 18 and 19. His agenda with them aligns with the shared vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future” while pointing toward a commitment to global collaboration.

This trip to Brazil is building on the successful G20 presidency India had in 2023, during which significant milestones were achieved, namely the induction of the African Union as a permanent member to the G20, a leaders’ declaration accepted amid geopolitical tensions, and other important decisions. Engagements by PM Modi with Brazilian counterparts are directed toward consolidated bilateral ties and further global cooperation in various sectors.

The preceding visit by the Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria was also equally historic. It symbolized the emerging bond between the two nations-the first visit after 17 years by an Indian prime minister to the West African nation. As part of his visit, PM Modi was awarded Nigeria’s highest civilian honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), and thus became the only second foreign dignitary after Queen Elizabeth II to receive this distinction.
As part of his Brazil visit, PM Modi will head to Guyana at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali between November 19 to 21. It will be the first time an Indian prime minister is visiting Guyana after nearly five decades, cementing India’s dedication toward developing foreign collaborations.
