PM Modi Makes Historic Visit to Brunei to Mark 40 Years of Diplomatic Ties, Sets Course for Strategic Discussions in Singapore
It is quite remarkable that the Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi is on a historical diplomatic tour as he becomes the first ever Indian Prime Minister to visit Brunei. This two-day visit is not only a historic event on the way to enhance bilateral relations between New Delhi and Bandar Seri Begawan but also is also the celebration of 40th anniversary of diplomatic partnership between India and Brunei. Upon the arrival of Modi in Brunei, a grand ceremonial welcome was given implying on the fact that this was a historic event.
During his visit Modi also laid the foundation stone of the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in Bandar Seri Begawan which is the capital of Brunei. He also used the time to discover the cultural side of Brunei such as attending the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque which is one of the most famous mosques in the country. His interaction with the Indian community that has been residing in the country since the discovery of oil in the early 1920s’ clearly pointed out that this diaspora could act as a link between India and Brunei.

The visit falls in line with India’s ‘Act East’ policy and the Indo-Pacific outlook which speaks volumes of the emerging bilateral relationship with Brunei. There are plans that various topics as regards bilateral relations and matters within the multilateral bodies will be brought up in the course of the visit to seek to enhance interaction and reveal more opportunities for partnership.

After his Brunei visit, PM Modi will travel to Singapore for which he has planned to hold several crucial meetings to enhance IndiaSingapore bilateral ties known as the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The visit is expected to be dedicated to the diverse themes such as on the advanced manufacturing, digitization and sustainable development to improve the relations between two nations. That Modi visited both Brunei and Singapore indicates that these nations are key to India’s regional and global foreign policies.
