Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh tunnel in Sonmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday, describing the union territory as the crown of India.” He expressed his hope to see the region flourish in both beauty and prosperity.
“Jammu and Kashmir is the nation’s crown jewel.” During the event, PM Modi declared, “I want this crown to be beautiful and prosperous.”

He said, “Today, I honour the seven coworkers who gave up everything to finish this task in spite of the difficulties.”
PM Modi also reflected on his longstanding relationship with Jammu and Kashmir, reminiscing about his time in the region during his earlier days as a BJP worker. “I have spent a lot of time here. Whether it was Sonmarg, Gulmarg, or Baramulla, we used to travel several kilometers on foot, braving heavy snowfall. But the warmth and love of the people here always overshadowed the cold,” he said.
About the Z-Morh Tunnel
The Z-Morh tunnel, built at a cost of ₹2,400 crore, spans 6.5 kilometers and is located on the strategic Srinagar-Leh National Highway. It aims to provide year-round connectivity to the Ladakh region, which often faces isolation during harsh winters due to heavy snowfall.
The construction of the tunnel began in May 2015 and was completed in 2024. Its “soft opening” took place in February 2024, ahead of its official inauguration.
The tunnel is expected to enhance the region’s economic prospects by improving access for trade, tourism, and essential services. Its completion marks a significant step in strengthening infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir and ensuring better connectivity to Ladakh.
