PM Modi Embarks on Historic Visit to Brunei and Singapore: Aiming to Strengthen Bilateral Ties and Enhance Strategic Partnerships in Advanced Manufacturing, Digitalization, and Sustainability
Currently, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started a very important two-nation tour which will be very monumental in recognition of India diplomatic relations with South East Asia. On the first visit, from 3-5 September 2024, the PM is visiting Brunei Darussalam as well as Singapore with the idea of bolstering the bilateral ties and thus, furthering India’s strategic interest in the region.

The visit commenced when PM Modi landed in Brunei Darussalam on 3 September on the royal invitation of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s latest visit is the first-ever bilateral visit made by an Indian Premier to Brunei, which proves the shift in priorities of the two countries. Coming at the time of India and Brunei diplomatic relations 40th year celebration, the visit will seek to chart the next level of the relationship. He stated so in his departure speech in which he acknowledged the historical nature of the trip as well as his expectations of productive talks with the Sultan and other members of the royal family of Brunei.

During the trip on September 4, the Prime Minister will visit Singapore to meeting with some top leaders which are President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong among others. The talks in Singapore are to be held on the development of the Strategic Partnership between the two states with reference to perspective directions of cooperation including advanced manufacturing, digitalisation and sustainable development. It’s significant to note that PM Modi’s Singapore visit showcased the longstanding bilateral relationship that both countries have with stress on increasing the collaboration in areas that are essential for growth in the future.

Significantly, both Brunei and Singapore are important players in India’s Act East Policy and its larger Indo-Pacific Outlook. Prime Minister Modi’s visit will certainly strengthen India’s relation with these countries and making them stronger allied justice for the region.
This visit follows recent diplomatic engagements, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s meeting with Brunei’s Foreign Minister Erywan Pehin Yusof at the ASEAN meetings in Vientiane, where they jointly launched a logo celebrating 40 years of India-Brunei diplomatic relations. Additionally, the Indian naval presence in Brunei and participation in the Defence Industry Exposition in June 2024 by Indian defense companies highlight the growing defense cooperation between the two countries.
As PM Modi’s visit progresses, it is clear that the focus is on building stronger ties with Brunei and Singapore, fostering cooperation in key areas, and reinforcing India’s commitment to its Act East Policy and engagement with the ASEAN region.
