The historic Maha Kumbh Mela, regarded by many as the most sacred and majestic religious festivals in the world, has opened with fervour and religious fervour in Prayagraj of Uttar Pradesh state, witnessing the arrival of the highest ever turnout of devotees who have assembled to seek God’s blessings under the sacred ritual of holy Ganga bath during the initiation process of the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025. It is the religious and cultural congregation Maha Kumbh Mela, which takes place once in four years at one of the four sacred places in India, being at Haridwar this time, followed by Prayagraj, Ujjain, and Nashik. The event of this year was not an exception to attract millions of people in pursuit of spiritual solace. This great confluence started from 13th January, 2025, to 26th February, 2025, thereby giving adequate time to the devotees to plunge themselves in this divine atmosphere.
Uttarakhand Chief Secretary, Manoj Kumar Singh, said that around 35 crore devotees would be visiting the city during the Mela. Mauni Amavasya on 29 January, 2025 is going to be the highpoint of the festival when an approximate four to five crore pilgrims would be coming to Prayagraj to take the dip at the sangam of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati River.
The term “Kumbh” comes from the Sanskrit word “kumbha,” which denotes a “pitcher.” This festival is also related to the planet Aquarius, which nearly symbolizes Jupiter. Kumbh Mela is held in cycles that revolve around the conjunction of the Sun and Jupiter. The word ‘Maha’ denotes the enormous size of the festival, and this time, it promises a whole lot more glorified turns.

Some dates mark important days that are called ‘Shahi Snan’ or the royal bathing day. With the festival going ahead as of about such days, thousands of devotees throng Sangam for holy dippings as one collective. It happened on the first Shahi Snan at 2025 January 14 coinciding with Makar Sankranti. Other significant dates of the festival are Shahi Snan on 29 Jan 2025; it is going to be performed during Mauni Amavasya, on 3rd Feb 2025: on Basant Panchami, and dated 12th Feb, Maghi Purnima, after which Grand Finale during Maha Shivratri is going to fall on 26th Feb 2025.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is also a mythological belief, which is situated at the sacred site of Triveni Sangam. This confluent includes rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati. According to mythological faith, it believes to be depicting the battle scene between gods and demons for getting the nectar of immortality. The spiritual renewal through Kumbh Mela is done through prayers and rituals and hallowed discussions conducted by ascetics, saints, and devotees.
Dating back to the 8th century, Maha Kumbh Mela was constituted as a debating ground by the great philosopher Adi Shankaracharya among the erudite ascetics, thus changing the event into an intellectual and spiritual center. The Kumbh Mela is conducted at each of the four places after every 12 years, while the Maha Kumbh is conducted once in 144 years after completing 12 cycles of the event. This period is astrologically synchronized with the planetary movements.
Preparations, special ones have been made there for comfort of millions and millions of visitors. For Foreign tourists, the scholars, research scholars, NRIs, returning Indians visiting this Mela and to cater all their needs Ministry of Tourism had set up this 5000 sq ft area Indian Pavilion in the Mela venue. To keep the crowds flowing, the Western Railway has put on reserve 98 special trains. The situation on the ground for air connectivity is improving quite significantly at Prayagraj, which would average around 117 weekly departures by February.
Maha Kumbh Mela is not merely a religious event but rather a world cultural festival of a number of communities. It would be their time to unify themselves in the worship activity for millions who will carry on their pilgrimages to Prayagraj.
