Congress’ Pawan Khera detained for his remarks on PM Modi, bailed by the SC

“I’m ready to fight. It’s going to be a long battle,” says Pawan Khera

Congress leader Pawan Khera was arrested at the Delhi airport on 23rd February after being deboarded from a flight from Raipur. On the tarmac, over 50 members of Congress staged a rare protest and halted the flight. The opposition party also appealed the arrest to the Supreme Court.

As part of the Congress party travelling to Raipur for the All India Congress Committee meeting, top Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera was forced to leave the IndiGo flight.

The Assam Police arrested Pawan Khera at the behest of the FIR filed in Assam by the BJP leader. When the cops took him away, he said, “I’m ready to fight. It’s going to be a long battle.”

Many Congress politicians stepped off the flight in protest, holding a sit-in protest on the tarmac at the Delhi airport.

In a statement, IndiGo stated: “Police detained a passenger from Raipur-bound flight 6E 204 at the Delhi airport. Some further passengers have independently chosen to disembark as well. We are following the advice of the concerned authorities. As of right now, there is a delay in the flight, and we apologise to the other passengers for the inconvenience.”

According to Mr Khera, he was initially informed that his luggage was the issue. “I was told that I cannot fly. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) will meet you, they said. I have been patiently waiting,” he said.

During a recent press conference, Mr Khera mispronounced PM Modi’s name while calling for a joint parliamentary investigation into the Adani-Hindenburg dispute. He continued, appearing to confirm the middle name with a colleague, “What issue does Narendra Gautam Das…sorry Damodardas…Modi has if Narasimha Rao could create a JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee) if Atal Bihari Vajpayee could form a JPC.

The BJP claimed that Mr Khera’s mistake was intentional.

“Make no mistake- pathetic remarks by courtier Pawan Khera on PM’s father have blessings of the top levels of Congress, full of entitlement and disdain against a person of humble origins being PM. India will not forget or forgive these horrible remarks of Congressmen,”, tweeted Assam CM Hemant Biswa.

According to latest media reports, Khera will be presented in a Delhi Court and taken to Assam on a transit remand.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera was granted interim relief by the Supreme Court.

The Court mandated that Khera be released on interim bail upon appearance before the jurisdictional magistrate in Delhi until the hearing’s next scheduled date.

On Khera’s writ suit asking for the FIRs to be consolidated, the Court also served notice on the States of UP and Assam, which had filed FIRs against him.
