Nuh violence: Rohingya refugees arrested

Nuh Violence: Haryana Police detain Rohingyas in clashes. Shanties demolished on encroached land. India hosts 16k UNHCR refugees.


After the clashes in Nuh district, Haryana Police have arrested several Rohingya refugees, as they have been identified for pelting stones and participating in the violence that occurred on July 31. Nuh superintendent of police, Narender Bijarniya, stated that a demolition drive was conducted on properties illegally occupied by some of the refugees, as they were encroaching on Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran land in Taru.

Rohingya Shanties Demolished:

Authorities demolished around 250 shanties on government land encroached by Rohingyas in Tauru and neighboring areas on August 4. Nuh Deputy Commissioner, Prashant Pawar, reported that over 50 illegal properties held by Rohingyas were identified, and the relevant authorities carried out the demolition drive with the support of the police force for security and manpower.

Rohingya Refugees in India:

Rohingya refugees are primarily Muslims who fled Myanmar in 2017 due to targeted violence by the government. India is home to around 16,000 UNHCR-certified Rohingya refugees, but the government estimates the actual number to be around 40,000.

To restore normalcy, the curfew in Nuh district was lifted between 9 am and 12 noon on Sunday and Monday, but internet shutdown continues until the situation normalizes, as informed by Nuh Deputy Commissioner Dhirendra Khadgata.
