Big Boost – India launches 4th nuclear-missile submarine!
This week, India strengthened its nuclear deterrence capabilities against possible enemies by launching its fourth nuclear- missile powered ballistic submarine (SSBN) at the Ship Building Center (SBC) in Visakhapatnam. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh officially opened the nation’s second SSBN, INS Arighaat, on August 29, 2024.
The third SSBN, INS Aridhaman, is scheduled to open the following year. In order to strengthen deterrence in the Indo-Pacific area, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) also authorized plans on October 9 for the Indian Navy to build two nuclear-powered attack submarines.

“Maritime security is a collective effort and inviting “outside forces” to the doorstep would dent efforts for unity,” said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in a statement to the neighboring countries that share maritime boundaries with India. The main goal should be to keep the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal peaceful. Since the nation’s security wheel breaks even if one country is left out, cooperation from India’s friendly states is crucial in this endeavor,” Singh stated.

The recently deployed S4* SSBN has around 75% domestic content and is equipped only with K-4 nuclear missile ballistic, which may be fired using vertical systems and have a range of 3,500 kilometers. On the other hand, INS Arihant, the first submarine of its kind, is equipped with 750-kilometer-range K-15 nuclear missiles.
The upgraded, more recent submarines are only outfitted with K-4 missiles. The only things limiting these SSBNs’ endurance and range are crew weariness, maintenance requirements, and food supply. A Russian Akula-class nuclear-missile-powered attack submarine is anticipated to join the fleet on lease in 2028, while both INS Arihant and INS Arighaat are already on deep-sea patrols.
