Northeast Election 2023: BJP sweeps Nagaland, Tripura; NPP wins Meghalaya

Northeast Election 2023: Know the latest updates in election results of Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura.

The Northeast Election 2023 took place in the three Northeastern states of Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura. The counting is on and the results will be declared today.

The elections in Tripura were conducted on 16th February and on 27th February for Meghalaya and Nagaland.

In Tripura, the polling was done for 60 Assembly seats, with a voter turnout of 88%.

In Nagaland, the polling was done for 59 Assembly constituencies out of the 60 seats as Kazheto Kinimi, the current MLA, was already elected unopposed for the Akuluto constituency. Despite some tension in some places, a voter turnout of 84% was seen.

In Meghalaya, the voter turnout for the 59 seats was around 76%. The voting for the 60th constituency was delayed due to the demise of HDR Lyngdoh, former Home Minister of Meghalaya.

What are the results indicating?

As counting began today (2nd March), the votes have been tipping in favour of the BJP in Tripura, NDPP in Nagaland, and NPP in Meghalaya.

BJP in Tripura

Manik Saha, the incumbent Chief Minister of Tripura, is expected to come back to power after this election as well. He contested the polls from the Town Bardowali constituency.

A shift in the political scene of Tripura was seen in 2018 when BJP came into power in the state. BJP also won the two parliamentary constituencies in Tripura.

Before the BJP came into power, the state had seen a long run by the Left Front political alliance. The Left Front was mainly constituted by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and other parties such as the Revolutionary Socialist Party, the All India Forward Bloc, and the CPI (Communist Party of India).

NDPP in Nagaland

The National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) split from the Naga People’s Front in 2017. Now incumbent Chief Minister Neiphui Rio belongs to this party and has served as the CM since 2003, making him the only CM in Nagaland to have served three consecutive terms. The NDPP- BJP alliance in Nagaland has been strong, and they are expected again to come into power. With 60 constituencies to contest, no party is contesting for more than 22 seats (Naga People’s Front is contesting for 22 seats). This automatically gives the NDPP-BJP alliance an edge and confidence to win the elections.

NPP in Meghalaya

The National People’s Party (NPP) has been a ruling force in the state since 2013. The party was founded in 2012 by P. A Sangma was the first political party from Northeastern India to get national party status. Conrad Sangma, the son of P. A Sangma, the current incumbent CM of Meghalaya, had taken over the party’s presidency after the death of his father P. A Sangma.

Continuing with the Sangma dynasty, the party is also leading in the elections and is expected to win a majority of the seats.

Stay posted to get the final updates on the election results.
