Former PM Deve Gowda’s Concern Over Parliament Chaos and Call for Democratic Decorum Amidst Turmoil
Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, the 90-year-old leader of the Janata Dal (Secular) party and a Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka, expressed his deep concern about the disruptive behavior in Parliament. He lamented the continuous disruptions, shouting matches, name-calling, and sloganeering that have marred the proceedings of the monsoon session. Gowda, who attended despite his health issues, stated that the current behavior represents a new low and emphasized that democracy can only thrive if all members maintain dignity and decorum.

Parliamentary Turmoil & Reforms:
He criticized the destructive impact of shouting, name-calling, and sloganeering on the already strained democratic system. The Monsoon Session, which commenced on July 20, has been marked by a parliamentary deadlock over various issues, including the Manipur violence. The Rajya Sabha session on Thursday was adjourned after a demand for discussion on Manipur by the Leader of Opposition, M Mallikarjun Kharge, that prompted protests from ruling party members. The opposition has also protested against a controversial bill introduced by the government, which aims to alter the selection panel for the Chief Election Commissioner.

The opposition has repeatedly called for a comprehensive discussion on this matter and urged the Prime Minister’s presence and statement in Parliament. Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have witnessed multiple adjournments due to the intense commotion created by opposition leaders.
