Supreme Court refuses to pause NEET-PG exam scheduled for Sunday

The Supreme Court denied a petition citing problems with exam center assignments and worries over the normalization of marks for two batches on Monday, declining to postpone the NEET-PG exam that was supposed to take place on Sunday. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud led a bench that declared, “This is not a perfect world, and we cannot devise a new education policy.”

The petitioners contended that the methodology for normalization ought to be made public prior to the examinations since there is a chance that one batch of applicants will encounter a more challenging question paper than the other group. Additionally, they said that since the exam locations will only be made public two days prior to the exams, many candidates and the petitioners had been assigned to cities that would be extremely difficult for them to go there.

“At the behest of five petitioners, should we keep the careers of two lakh students in jeopardy?” the top court queried, noting that “two lakh students and four lakh parents will suffer” if the plea is granted.

Appearing for the petitioners, senior attorney Sanjay Hegde said that it would be challenging for the candidates to take two exams: one in the afternoon and one in the morning. “We are not entertaining” was the ruling issued by the bench, which included Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra under Chief Justice Chandrachud. The court denied the plea. June 23 was the original date for the NEET-PG entrance exam for medical courses. The Union Health Ministry postponed it as a “precautionary measure” in response to reports of anomalies in specific competitive exams.
