Speaking to Indian journalists, three-time Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, the leader of Pakistan Muslim League (N), said he is hopeful that the visit will “break the ice” between the two countries. “Both countries must take further the good steps taken so far-for instance, the surprise visit from the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Lahore in December 2015,” Sharif said.

India and Pakistan can’t change their geography; they are, after all, neighbors. Sharif believed India and Pakistan must learn to live side by side in peace, as : “We have spent 70 years of conflict; we shouldn’t do it again in the next 70 years. It’s high time to sit and discuss ways on how to go forward,” said Sharif.

He also ticked former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for some provocative language against Modi he said which had further marred the diplomatic relationship, which Sharif promised to improve by restoring trade and cricket matches between the two nations. One of the areas which Sharif said can be moved forward is trade between the two nations, which has stalled since 2019 over heightened tensions following the Pulwama attack.
