Thirty-one people have died at Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College Hospital in Maharashtra’s Nanded against the figure of twenty-four on Monday. In response, the government announced that it would hold a Maharashtra cabinet meeting to look into reported cases of killing at least 31 patients, involving sixteen infants at the government-owned hospital in Nanded district in the state of Maharashtra. Officials informed that the government had set up an inquiry committee to investigate the incident.

Rising Death Toll in Nanded Hospital
Meanwhile, the death toll at Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College Hospital had increased to 31 from the previous figure of 24. An official also stated that the Maharashtra cabinet might decide if there will be a probe into the case through the news agency. The government hospital in Nanded reported twenty-four deaths between September 30 and October 1. The casualties included twelve infants. Officials attributed this to the absence of proper equipment and, scar the city of doctors and drugs.

Dr. Dilip Mhaisekar, director of medical education & research, Maharashtra Cabinet informed news agency PTI that in the last 24 hours, as many as 24 persons have died in the Nanded Govt. Hospital These included the referral of twelve infants to this unit by some local private hospitals. However, Shyamrao Wakode, Dean of the college dismissed charges of negligence against the Hospital and told ANI that all the deceased patients had ailments like diabetes, liver failure and kidney failure.

These deaths have caused a political crisis, where the opposition party criticized the prime minister, Narendra Modi for keeping quiet on the matter. Within minutes of these reports, opposition leaders like Sharad Pawar, Rahul Gandhi, Supriya Sule and Priyanka Chaturvedi jumped on this issue, targeting the Eknath Shinde government.
Healthcare Crisis in Nanded
Sharad Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party, X Social Media, Y Formal Twitter. ‘The unfortunate incident of the death of 24 people including 12 newborns in 24 hours in a Nanded government hospital is so shocking. Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition questioned the state government’s health infrastructure and sought an inquiry into it.
It is stated that these patients have died due to the lack of medicine and treatment. In August 2023, a similar incident occurred in a Government Hospital at Thane where 18 patients died.
“Therefore, we call for further investigations which should result in the conviction and punishment in courts,” he said.

The former chief minister and a local Congress MLA, Ashok Chavan, visited the government hospital in Nanded for an assessment of the situation. This is very unfortunate because government medical colleges are facing a serious crisis. The reason for this state is its medical deficiency.

In this respect, Chavan stated that when he discussed the matter with the dean, the latter confirmed that there had been about 24 deaths in the previous twenty- four hours and seventy others in critical condition (Chavan). He said some of these cases had been referred to private hospitals and this means that the death toll could rise.
