Murder or Cover-Up? Maybe she knew something that she was not supposed to..
Moumita Debnath was a 31-year-old second-year postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal – who was tragically found dead under suspicious circumstances on the morning of August 9, 2024. After finishing her long shift of 36 hours, she went to the seminar hall at nearly 2 am to take some rest. Her body was discovered in the hospital seminar hall, semi-nude, with evident signs of a violent attack.
The Autopsy report say
The autopsy classified her death as “homicidal” and “antemortem,” ruling out claims that she was raped after being murdered. It also detected around 150 mg of semen in the vaginal swab, leading to suspicions of gang rape. The autopsy report is enough to prove that it was a gang rape. However, Kolkata Police dismissed these claims, stating that it’s impossible to visually distinguish semen from multiple individuals during an autopsy.
Evidence at the crime scene
After an investigation, the police arrested a suspect on August 9, following the discovery of his Bluetooth headset at the crime scene. The suspect, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police Disaster Management force, was taken into custody after CCTV footage and other evidence connected him to the crime. On the night of the incident, he allegedly drank alcohol with a patient’s relative before entering the seminar hall where the victim was resting. After committing the crime, he was observed leaving the premises around 4:30 AM. Upon his arrest, he confessed to the crime.
Connection of former principal
The former principal had all the right to take action against the case as he could have filed an FIR but all he did was resign from the college, Hours later, the West Bengal government appointed him the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH), would it have been possible without government support. It was found that he had ties with the Trinamool Congress and was being shielded by them.
On Saturday, Dr. Ghosh was interrogated for the second time, with the questioning lasting over 13 hours, from 10 AM on Saturday until well past midnight on Sunday. Additionally, it was uncovered that Dr. Sandip Ghosh may also be involved in organ trafficking and sex-drug rackets. The CBI is tracking the phone calls and text details of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s former principal, Sandip Ghosh, to determine if the rape and murder of the trainee doctor was termed ‘suicide’ on his instructions.
Reaction of Trinamool Congress (TMC)
The West Bengal government, led by the TMC, has been criticized for failing to ensure women’s safety, with allegations that the hospital misrepresented Dr. Moumita Debnath’s death as a suicide. Doubts about the Kolkata Police’s investigation led the Calcutta High Court to transfer the case to the CBI. TMC MP Mahua Moitra dismissed any claims of a cover-up as “absolutely wrong and incorrect.”
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal responded by blaming the media for the allegations against the Kolkata Police. He asserted that the police had done everything possible to solve the case and insisted that they had not committed any wrongdoing.
The Commissioner denied that any call was made to the victim’s family informing them that the victim had committed suicide. When questioned about the gang rape, the Commissioner refused to answer.
