Mumbai Air Pollution Crisis: BMC Halts Construction in ‘Poor’ AQI Areas to Combat Rising Smog

Mumbai, often regarded as India’s financial capital, is grappling with worsening air pollution levels. In a decisive move, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has banned construction and demolition activities on both government and private projects in areas where the Air Quality Index (AQI) has dipped into the ‘poor’ category.

The decision comes amid growing concerns over the city’s deteriorating air quality, which has reached alarming levels in recent weeks. With AQI readings hovering around 250 to 300 in various parts of the city, residents have reported increased respiratory issues and other health concerns. Construction and demolition activities have been identified as one of the major contributors to rising pollution levels, along with vehicular emissions and industrial activities.

The ban, applicable immediately, is aimed at reducing the dust and particulate matter released into the atmosphere during such activities. BMC officials have stated that this is a temporary measure and will be reviewed as air quality improves. Contractors and project managers have been instructed to implement dust control measures, including covering construction materials and spraying water to suppress dust on-site. Non-compliance will result in heavy fines.

Environmentalists have welcomed the move, calling it a much-needed step to curb pollution in Mumbai. However, developers have raised concerns over delays and financial losses. “While we understand the necessity of the ban, there needs to be a balanced approach to ensure projects don’t suffer long-term setbacks,” said a spokesperson for the Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry.

With Mumbai’s air pollution now drawing comparisons to Delhi’s infamous smog, the BMC’s proactive steps could serve as a model for other cities. Residents, meanwhile, are hopeful that this intervention will bring some respite and lead to cleaner, breathable air in the coming weeks.
