A tragic accident in the Kurla area of Mumbai on Monday night killed six people and injured 49 when a BEST bus lost its control and crashed into pedestrians and vehicles. This incident occurred at around 9:45 pm, surprising the densely populated locality. The authorities have arrested the bus driver after the accident.

The BEST bus, plying on Route 332, was going from Kurla Station to Andheri when it went astray and hit many pedestrians and vehicles before crashing into the wall of a residential society. It was said that the scene was chaotic with people running for their lives and emergency teams reaching the spot.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has sent condolences to the family members and also promised an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh to them. Besides this, the medical expense of those injured would be borne by the BEST and the BMC.

The bodies have been identified as Kannis Fatima Ansari, Shivam Kashyap, Afreen Abdul Salim Shah, and Anam Shaikh. A forensic team on Tuesday visited the accident spot to collect evidence. The police confirmed that the injured persons were rushed to nearby hospitals, Bhabha Hospital, for medical attention.

CCTV footage of the area captured the moment the bus, traveling at an alarming speed, hit other vehicles and pedestrians. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Ganesh Gawde said, “The BEST bus lost control and crushed several vehicles. Injured persons are being treated, and the driver is in custody. A thorough inquiry is underway to determine the cause.”

Sanjay More, the driver of the bus, has been arrested in connection with the accident which occurred shortly after the accident took place. The driver is liable for involuntary manslaughter under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The driver is being subjected to a medical examination regarding alcohol consumption. BEST technical team will inspect the bus whether there are mechanical defects, and More was appointed a driver on 1 December is likely to present himself in the court later today.

Emergency services like the police force and the fire brigade showed prompt response, laboring overtime to rescue the victims and clean the site. More than 45 victims were injured, with some still getting treatment. The terrible road accident led to concerns regarding safety on city roads as well as infrastructural maintenance in one of the country’s most vibrant metropolitans.

This tragic accident has left the city of Mumbai in mourning, with citizens calling for stricter measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Authorities have pledged to conduct a comprehensive investigation to ensure accountability and improve safety standards.
