India Reports First Case of Mpox Clade 1b Strain in Kerala, Prompting Renewed Concerns Following WHO’s Public Health Emergency Declaration
India has reported the first case of the Mpox clade 1b strain, which is a substantial strain connected to the WHO’s recent announcement of Mpox as a public health emergency. This case detected on Monday involves thirty-eight-year-old man from Malappuram district of Kerala who arrived from the United Arab Emirates. Today the patient is not in critical condition and is under medical supervision.

This particular strain is a landmark in the country’s health sector, given the WHO analysis of the increasing incidence of the Mpox virus, especially in Africa. India has a cumulative tally of 30 cases of Mpox after the disease was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in 2022. Earlier this month another person, a 26-year-old man from Hisar in Haryana had also contracted the West Africa Clade 2 strain.
The Mpox clade 1b strain is of Central African origin and tends to cause severe disease and disseminate quickly. The WHO estimates that there have been more than 30 000 suspected Ebola cases in Africa this year, with the majority of the cases occurring in the Democratic Republic of Congo where health care capacity is already stretched. The organization also pointed out that over 800 suspected deaths from Mpox have been recorded throughout the continent. Currently, health officials are closely watching the development of the virus and the key objective is to prevent further dissemination and protect people’s lives.
