Millions of Devotees Gather for the First ‘Amrit Snan’ at Prayagraj’s Maha Kumbh on Makar Sankranti

The spiritual energy of Prayagraj reached a zenith as more than 1.5 crore devotees gathered to take the first ‘Amrit Snan’ at Maha Kumbh Mela on the holy day of Makar Sankranti. By 10:30 am on Tuesday, around 13.8 million pilgrims had already taken the sacred dip, making it a very meaningful moment in one of the largest religious congregations in the world.

A second ‘snan’, later this afternoon, is special as it happens a day after the first major ‘snan’ on Paush Poornima, which also witnessed thousands of devotees thronging the sacred ghat. Makar Sankranti devotees have braved the chill as they started gathering at the Triveni Sangam–the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and mystical Saraswati–from very early in the morning. It added to the sanctity of the occasion when several Akharas, an old order of ascetics and seers, participated and took their holy dips to reinforce the event’s religious and cultural importance.

The ritualistic ‘Amrit Snan’ began on Tuesday at 5:30 am, which the social media sites captured by clicking the pictures with a deep devotion and enthusiasm shown by the devotees. People of Mahanirvani Panchayati Akhada were there marching in procession and taking rituals of holy baths. The revered sadhus added the essence to this atmosphere, thus giving a fascinating picture of devotion.

The Maha Kumbh, held once every 12 years, carries exceptional importance this time due to unique celestial alignments that seers claim occur only once in 144 years. Such astrological configurations are believed to magnify the event’s spiritual potency, drawing unprecedented crowds. The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has prepared extensively to accommodate an expected 35 crore devotees throughout the event’s duration.

According to astrologers such as Triloki Nath Singh, Makar Sankranti refers to the transit of the Sun into a new zodiac in the Hindu calendar, which initiates a positive cycle and religious revival. At the same time, it marks the beginning of the Maha Kumbh by the performance of charities. The offerings are made with a sense of selfless surrender by the pilgrims, another facet of this rich cultural and religious festival.

Many devotees who had taken a holy dip during Paush Poornima chose to stay back for Makar Sankranti, underlining the deep faith and spiritual connection that the Maha Kumbh inspires. The ongoing celebrations will continue until February 26, coinciding with Maha Shivratri. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has hailed the event as a global showcase of India’s ancient cultural and spiritual heritage. He said that he was sure the Maha Kumbh would further consolidate India’s position as a land of deep religious and cultural traditions.

For devotees, the Maha Kumbh is a journey to purification and peace rather than an event for mere ritualistic activities. The energy of millions of faithful people in Prayagraj becomes an epicenter of hope and divinity. As the Kumbh moves into its full scale, much more is still on offer through its promise for deeply spiritual experiences bringing together millions from all around the world for their celebration in man’s time-worn journey of transcendence.

Prayagraj Kumbh has remained a perfect testimony to ageless Indian tradition and has welcomed millions to the sacred grounds with its rituals dating back hundreds of years. Through a wonderful amalgamation of spirituality, culture, and community, it continues to ring out as one of the greatest congregations that humankind ever saw.
