A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, causing building collapses, mass evacuations in Bangkok, and tremors felt across Thailand and China.
Myanmar Earthquake: Massive 7.7 Magnitude Quake Strikes, Bangkok Shakes as Buildings Collapse and Ava Bridge Falls
The major earthquake of 7.7 magnitudes struck Myanmar on 28 Mar, generating widespread tremors felt in northern Thailand and all the way to Bangkok. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) data, it struck on October 8, 2023, at around 12:50 PM local time (0620 GMT), with an epicenter lying 16 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of Sagaing down to a depth of 10 kilometers. There were reports of great destruction as buildings crumpled to the ground, a number of bridges collapsed, and residents fled in utter terror.
The Tremors and the Fallout from the Indonesia Earthquake
The tremors were felt in many areas beyond those in Myanmar, including Thailand and China’s Yunnan Province. In Thailand, the Prime Minister declared a state of emergency for Bangkok owing to mass evacuations that ensued following the quake. Reports from Myanmar indicated that the famed Ava Bridge in Mandalay had collapsed and fallen into the Irrawaddy River. Moreover, a number of buildings were reported to have gone down in the locality due to the quake’s ferocity.
Panic and Evacuations in Bangkok
Chicago, which is not widely known to experience seismic activity, was gripped heavily by tremors from the earthquake. Social media flooded with videos showing high-rise buildings swaying violently as terrified residents fled for the streets. Many offices, hotels, and condominiums immediately proceeded to evacuation just as a precaution. In another of the affected areas in Thailand, Chiang Mai, locals described their fear as they sprinted out of their homes. “I heard it, and I was sleeping in the house. I ran as far as I could in my pyjamas out of the building,” said Duangjai, a resident of Chiang Mai.

Structural Damage From Earthquake and Rescue Operations Underway
The earthquake rendered structural damage of great magnitude, including the collapse of a partly finished building in Thailand. Emergency teams were quickly sent out to assist affected communities in Myanmar, Thailand, and China. As well, the authorities have been monitoring aftershocks, continuously estimating the risks posed by possible secondary disasters resulting from the large earthquake, like landslides and failure of infrastructure.
Reactions Worldwide and Aiding Hand
Assistant in Myanmar and regions affected by the disaster has been assured by the worldwide community, governments, and humanitarian organizations. Possible earthquakes set aid in place for the uprooted and affected victims. Warnings have been issued to the residents in the affected areas in preparedness mode for potential aftershocks.
What Next?
Experts are examining the seismic activity to assess fully the damage and likelihood of aftershocks. While rescue and relief operations are under way, authorities remain alert within Myanmar, Thailand, and China. This earthquake clearly reminds us of the unpredictable force of nature and how important preparedness is in earthquake-battered regions.
