Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s former Prime Minister and a key architect of its economic reforms, has died at the age of 92. He passed away on Thursday evening at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi after suffering a sudden loss of consciousness at home. Despite resuscitation efforts, he was declared dead at 9:51 PM.
Dr. Singh served as Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014, leading the Congress-led coalition government. Known for his calm demeanor and personal integrity, he played a significant role in shaping modern India’s economy. As Finance Minister in 1991, he introduced reforms that opened India’s economy and helped it recover from a severe financial crisis.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Punjab, undivided India, Singh excelled in academics, earning degrees in economics from Cambridge and Oxford. He worked as a professor and later served in key government roles, including as the Reserve Bank of India Governor and Chief Economic Adviser.

During his time as Prime Minister, Singh implemented policies like the Right to Information Act and a rural employment guarantee scheme, benefiting millions. He also brokered the historic U.S.-India nuclear deal, which strengthened India’s global position but faced criticism at home.

Tributes poured in after his passing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Singh as one of India’s most distinguished leaders who left a lasting impact on economic policy. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called him a mentor, praising his wisdom and integrity. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken hailed Singh’s efforts to strengthen U.S.-India relations.

Dr. Singh also worked towards peace with Pakistan and made efforts to resolve border issues with China. However, his tenure faced challenges, including corruption scandals that overshadowed his second term.
He is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and three daughters. As the nation mourns, Dr. Singh will be remembered as a visionary leader who left a profound legacy in India’s history.
