Manish Sisodia Arrest: ‘I am a follower of Bhagat Singh’

Manish Sisodia Arrest: “The party will mark the day as a black day”, says AAP’s Gopal Rai

On Monday 27th February, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) called for a nationwide protest over the deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia arrest in connection with the now-cancelled excise policy 2021–2022. The Delhi Police also issued an alert in response to the AAP’s demand for a protest.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained Sisodia in connection with possible irregularities in the excise policy 2021–2022. He was questioned by the bureau of investigation for almost eight hours prior to his arrest.

The Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, called it “dirty politics,” adding that there is a lot of “anger” among the people and that they will “respond” to this.  He also claimed that CBI has no evidence against him and he is behind bars only due to “political pressure”

On 26th February, before leaving for the CBI office, Sisodia said: “I will fully participate in the entire investigation by returning to CBI today. We have the support of millions of children and millions of fellow citizens. I don’t mind if I have to spend a few months in jail. I am a follower of Bhagat Singh, who gave his life to save the nation. Going to jail over such baseless allegations is a little thing.”

“Manish, God is with you. You have the blessings of millions of kids and their parents. Going to jail for your nation and society is not a curse; it is an honour. I pray to God to let you out of this jail soon. Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister, wrote in a morning tweet that “children, parents, and all of Delhi will be waiting for you.”

This arrest, one of the most visible moves against an opposition politician, comes after that of Satyendar Jain, Delhi’s former Health Minister, in June of the last year 2017. The Aam Aadmi Party claims that both ministers have successfully transformed Delhi’s educational and healthcare systems, which has boosted the party’s popularity and continuing electoral success.

Along with MPs Sanjay Singh, Raghav Chadha, and MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj, Sisodia spent about 15 minutes at Rajghat before going for the questioning.

On Sunday 26th February, police detained 50 people near the CBI office, including AAP MP Sanjay Singh and Minister Gopal Rai.

Senior AAP leader Gopal Rai said the party will mark the day as a “black day” and stage protests against Sisodia’s arrest across the nation.
