Tragic Incident May Ethnic Clashes
The backdrop to this tragic incident is the turmoil and violence that have engulfed Manipur since May. The unrest began following a high court order instructing the state government to consider granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the non-tribal Meitei community. This order sparked ethnic clashes, resulting in more than 170 fatalities and several hundred injuries. The violence initially erupted on May 3 during a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for ST status.
The Manipur government’s commitment to resolving the case and delivering justice to the victims reflects the gravity of the situation and the need to address the underlying tensions in the region. The involvement of the CBI underscores the government’s determination to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation into this tragic incident.
