Tensions Ease in Manipur as Two Abducted Boys from Kangpokpi Are Released Following Negotiations and Prisoner Exchange with Kuki Groups

The on going turmoil in Manipur has taken an upward turn with the release of two kidnapped boys from Kangpokpi. On Thursday, these Meitei hostages were released after a strategic deal of the government with the Kuki groups. In return for the boys, the government agreed to allow 11 prisoners to be shifted from Sajiwa Central Jail in Meitei-populated Imphal to Churachandpur Jail. The Kuki militants had kidnapped three Meitei people last Friday, and the release of one of them happened shortly after.

The Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also triumphantly announced on his personal Facebook page that the two boys have returned safely and thanked all officials in the state and in the centre who have worked tirelessly for this rescue. After five days of operation, the hostages were released to the police superintendent of Kangpokpi with the participation of the representatives of the Assam Rifles. Thankfully, both persons escaped the encounter without serious injuries to their lives.

This release was however eased with the help of the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) which is a Kuki based organization. COTU spokes person Kaimonlen Silthou reiterated that the group would do everything within its power to protect the children, the elderly and the civilians despite the group’s engagement in a fight against the Meitei community. Ongoing interactions between Kuki organizations and Manipur Police for the release of hostages led to a 48-hour shut down in the capital city Imphal. As tension between the two groups of Meitei and Kuki continues to rise this event is another sad story of innocent people being affected by the conflict.
