On Thursday, the Manipur government lifted its broadband Internet ban in five districts of Imphal Valley. The restriction, which had been in place since September 10, affected Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, and Bishnupur. The ban was imposed following violent student protests demanding action on ongoing ethnic violence and the resignation of key officials.

The government’s decision to restore broadband services aims to address disruptions in essential services such as healthcare, refueling centers, and online-based services, which had been severely impacted by the ban. However, mobile Internet services remain suspended, and an indefinite curfew continues in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Thoubal districts.

Despite the partial lifting of the ban, violence has flared up in Jiribam district, which borders Assam. Early Thursday morning, miscreants set fire to a primary health center in Jiribam. No one was present at the time of the incident. There are also reports of a gunfight in the district, though details are not yet clear.

The Manipur Police have arrested 33 people and detained seven juveniles in connection with the recent protests. Legal actions are being pursued against those involved in the violence.

In response to the escalating situation, the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur to assess the situation and ensure the safety of the affected communities, especially women and children. NESO has called for immediate government intervention to address the conflict and suggested forming a high-level peace committee with representatives from all communities to seek a resolution.

NESO criticized the handling of the conflict, highlighting reports of drone and missile strikes that have exacerbated the situation. The organization warned that such actions only deepen the divide between communities and make a peaceful resolution even more difficult to achieve.
